One of the most effective and commonly used production enhancement methods is hydraulic fracturing, usually achieved by pumping a proppant and fluid blend at high rate into the target formation. As a treatment proceeds, pressure builds until fractures open and the fluid/proppant slurry is forced into the cracks. After the pumping phase is completed and pressure relieved by fluid flowback and/or natural leak-off, the proppant is left in place, positioning the fracture open.
Hydrocarbons can then flow out of the reservoir, into and through the fracture network, and on to the wellbore.
